Flash rust is a common issue when using water-based coatings on metal surfaces, occurring when rust appears before the coating dries completely. Known as 'construction corrosion,' flash rust is an electrochemical reaction accelerated by water acting as an electrolyte, leading to rapid oxidation. Low temperatures, high humidity, and substrate composition significantly intensify this problem, which not only affects appearance but also compromises coating performance. Flash rust inhibitors typically combine organic compounds and polymers. Organic compounds form a hydrophobic barrier on metal surfaces, while polymers chemically chelate with metal ions to form a passivation layer. Together, they achieve both physical isolation and chemical passivation. These inhibitors are compatible with various water-based coating systems, including acrylic, alkyd, and epoxy formulations, with dosages tailored to substrate and environmental conditions. Evaluation of inhibitors involves standards such as ASTM D610 and testing in high-temperature, high-humidity environments to simulate real-world conditions. For long-term corrosion resistance, salt spray and electrochemical impedance tests are applied. By understanding and employing the right inhibitors, industries can effectively mitigate flash rust and enhance coating durability.
